In accordance with SDCL Chapter 23-3-71, the Law Enforcement Officers Training and Standards Commission, in consultation with the SD Department of Health, has established a training program for county coroners.
All newly selected county coroners must attend a 16-hour training program within one year of appointment. This training focuses on; (1) Death scene investigation and (2) Death registration. Law Enforcement Training will host this training annually, in Pierre.
All incumbent county coroners must complete 8 hours of advanced or refresher training, every two years, in the following subject areas:
(1) Death scene investigation; and
(2) Death registration.
Coroners are required to submit a letter certifying they have completed the 8 hours of training to the commission, through Law Enforcement Training, by December 31st of the following years: 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024, 2026, etc.
Coroners are also required to maintain a record of the training and to make the records available to the commission upon request.
